>>Harris Chain, FL, Jan 25. The first leg of the Florida State Championship was held at the Harris Chain of Lakes in Tavares, Florida. Multiple cold fronts moved through the area with lows at night in the 30's. High winds during the first day challenged fishermen and changed stratigies.
First place was John Schantz and Scott Hunt, from Iowa. They were 4th after day one with 8.25 pounds and finished with 15.25 for the overall win. This was the teams first win. They pulled Zip jigs and Ice jigs tipped with minnows. They fished 8 to 15 foot waters with fish being at 4 to 7 feet deep.
Second place Johnson Fishing Team, Billy and Scott Williams, from Georgia. They finished with 14.17 pounds. They spider rigged using minnows. They said gold hooks were critical to success. They fished 5 to 6 feet deep in 10 foot water.
Third was John Shannon with 13.84 pounds. He used Zip and Ice jigs while spider rigging.
Big fish went to Jason Little and Troy Theil with 1.84. Second were Don and Toni Collins with 1.68.

>>Lake Monroe, FL, Feb 1. The second leg of the Florida Championship was held on Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River. There were 33 teams.
Matt Morgan and Kent Watson won with 12.88 pounds. They slow trolled in 16 foot waters catching fish off the bottom, switching to lily pads the last two hours. They used Rockport Rattlers with blue-chartreuse MidSouth jigs.
Second place were Billy and Scott Williams with 12.09. They spider rigged with double-hook minnow rigs in 21 feet of water catching their fish on bottom.
Danny & Beth Williamson were the top male-female team. Bob Kerber and Scott Broxton were top adult-youth fishermen. Big fish was 2.77 caught by Rick Howard and Blake Rodgers.

>>Crescent Lake, FL Jan 18. Cabela's Crappie USA opening tournament of 2014 included fishermen from 11 different states with 41 teams in the Amateur Division and 20 teams in Semi-Pro. Winds at 20 miles per hour made the main lake very difficult to fish. Teams said fish were stuck tight to the bottom.
Amateur winners were Jason, Chuck and (youth) Brody Little of Georgia. They had 14.56 pounds earning $1,200. They long line trolled north of the island in the middle of Crescent Lake in 13 to 14 feet of water. They used blue/chartreuse Charlie Brewer Sliders. Second place was Troy Thiel and Ricky Willis with 13.14 pounds.
Semi-Pro Division winners were George Parker and Tim Eberly with 13.39 pounds earning $1,500. They long line trolled Dunn's Creek in 11 to 13 feet of water with blue/green AWD jigs catching 75 fish. They fished the jigs on bottom.
Second place was Dallas Thomas and Greg Caldwell with 13.17 pounds. Third was Dennis Outlaw and Shelborn Bass with 12.59. Fourth place was Danny and Beth Williamson with 11.91. Fifth thru seventh was Lloyd-Hinson 11.61, Cole-Badley 11.57, and Williams-Williams 11.25.
Big fish anglers were Tommy Cherry and Harry Foskey with a 2.50 slab. Fee-Loy 2.23; Huff-Huff 2.22.
