Wow has it been a hot, hot summer! September is the transition month for several parts of our beautiful country. This means that the crappie will start their feeding binges to prepare for the cold winter months.
Cooler nights and days will definitely spark the fish to pursue the maturing shad and minnows in their lake and river habitats. Fish will congregate near or around the food to build body fat. This opens up catching the crappie with several other techniques in open water.
I just returned from a trip on Rend Lake in Illinois working with the Offshore Tackle planer board folks on how to use the boards with jigs and crank baits. Learning to pull the boards wasn’t that difficult. We will address this new technique in future articles in our magazine.
We were also using the new technologies including Garmin Panoptyx. We were able to locate critical structures and depths. We isolated fish and baitfish schools around the river channels and ledges.
